Adelia Benson Lannom, age 99, of Fort Stockton, Texas, slipped away peacefully at home Thursday, November 11, 2021, following a lengthy illness. Adelia was surrounded by her children at the time of her passing.
Adelia (Benson) Lannom was born January 27, 1922, in the birthing room of her grandparent's home in Clarendon, Texas, to Floyd and Minnie Benson. Adelia graduated High School in Hereford, Texas, and went on to attend West Texas Teacher College in Canyon, Texas, for one year. Adelia then moved to Fort Stockton, where she went to work for her uncle, Harrison Dyche.
She met and married the love of her life, Bernie Lannom, on her 20th birthday, January 27, 1942, in the old Presbyterian Church (now the Pollard Building) in Fort Stockton, Texas. Adelia followed Bernie around the country while he served in the Army during World War II, until he was sent overseas. At that time Adelia returned to Hereford, where she gave birth to their first child, Tony, and waited for Bernie to return home from the war. They were blessed with two more children, Donald, and Althea. Adelia and Bernie were married 75 years.
Adelia worked for Winkler's Department Store as a bookkeeper for many years and was considered a valued employee. Following her retirement from Winkler's, Adelia took up painting and was an accomplished landscape painter, selling many of her works of art to friends and strangers alike throughout the West Texas area. She was also a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Stockton, where she taught Sunday School for many years. When she and Bernie retired, they moved to the Davis Mountain Resort and she became a valued member of the Davis Mountain Resort Church, where she attended regularly during the time she and Bernie lived there, outside of Fort Davis, Texas.
Adelia was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie and Floyd Benson, her husband, Bernie, and a sister, Evelyn. She leaves behind her children, Tony (Dianna) Lannom of Fort Davis, Donald (Lorraine) Lannom of Fort Stockton, and Althea Lannom Armstrong of Fort Stockton. Grandchildren are Cary (Laura) Lannom of Fort Stockton, Laura Lannom of Fort Davis, Misti (Adam) Warren of Siloam, Arkansas, Clint (Christy) Lannom of Midland, Keynon (Janet) Lannom of San Angelo, Kevin Childers of Austin, and Lisa Childers Rivera (Tino) of St. Augustine, Florida, numerous Great Grandchildren, two Great-great Grandchildren and many other family members and friends who loved her dearly.
Adelia was given loving care during her last years of life by her children and El Vira Silva. She will be missed by so many.
