Delton Yarbrough was born May 19, 1918 to Roy and Eula Yarbrough in Turkey, Texas. He passed from this life into the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 23, 2013 at the age of 95.
Delton was raised on a farm in Turkey. He recounted many stories of growing up during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl years. Upon graduation from Turkey High School he entered Sul Ross and came to Fort Stockton during the summer to work. He worked as a soda jerk at the old Stockton Pharmacy on Bull Dog Corner for 10cents an hour.
It was during his stay in Fort Stockton that he met Bera Smith. They were married on October 3, 1942. Shortly after they were married Delton entered the service and served his country from 19421945 in New Guinea and the Philippines during WWII.
After returning from the war in 1945 he went to watch making school in San Antonio. Upon graduation he and Bera moved to Quanah, Texas where he opened a jewelry store and Bera taught school. In 1953 they moved back to Fort Stockton where he opened a jewelry and watch repair business. The business was eventually named The Jewel Box, and he owned and operated it until his retirement in the mid 1980s.
Delton was a man of great faith. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Stockton and served as a deacon for many years. He had a gift of song and a beautiful voice. He was a member of a local mens quartet composed of himself, C.W. Nix, Bill Moody and A.D. Jackson. They sang at church gatherings, funerals, weddings, and even water carnivals.
Delton had a special love for his family, especially his grandchildren. They had a special place in his heart and will miss him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bera parents brothers, Alvis, Woodrow, Glenn, James, Louis, and a sister, Grace.
He is survived by his son Dr. Del Yarbrough and wife Libby of Fort Stockton daughter Sheri Combest and husband Mark of Flower Mound six grandchildren, Chris Yarbrough and wife Catherine of Bellaire, Blake Yarbrough and wife Amanda of Nederland Lyndsey Callahan and husband Bryan of Willow Park Bryan Combest and wife Shannon of Dallas Kara Combest of Austin and Jared Combest of Flower Mound three great grandchildren, Addie Yarbrough, Jaxon Yarbrough and Lauren Callahan.
Visitation will be at Heritage Funeral Home on Monday August 26, 2013 from 68 pm. A graveside service will be at East Hill Cemetery August 27, 2013 at 10am.
