Encarnación (Chon) Nuñez passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
Born on June 17, 1932, in Fort Stockton, Chon remained a devoted resident of his hometown throughout his life. He met his late wife, Concha Nuñez, at the CJ Morrison five-and-dime store while delivering ice for the Fort Stockton Ice Company. They were married for 65 years before she passed away in 2020. Together, they owned and operated Nuñez Grocery. Chon was fondly known as the “Raspa Man,” a beloved figure in the community who began with an open-air, three-wheeled Cushman cart full of treats, which later evolved into a square truck that played music, sending children running to get a sweet treat. After retiring, he cherished making memories with his family and was always seen with a smile on his face.
Chon is preceded in death by his wife, Concha Nuñez, his father, Chon Nuñez; his mother, Sarah Nuñez; and several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sons: Joe Martin Nuñez (wife, Mickie), Raymond Nuñez (wife, JoAnn), and Chon Nuñez Jr. (wife, Nellie); along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
