Francisca Acosta

Francisca Viola Acosta passed away March 09, 2017. She was born to Fred Granado and Petra Gomez Granado on July 02, 1938 in Fort Stockton, Texas. She was the only child from this marriage. Viola was raised by her mother after her parents divorced. Viola loved school, but her mother kept her out so she could work and helped support the family. She would miss half of the school year, so this put her behind in school. Nevertheless, she would catchup. As a very young girl she was very mature and responsible. She started babysitting at the age of 12 years. She was trusted and well liked. While in high school, she participated in volleyball and met the love of her life, Abel Acosta. She married and moved to Lubbock. Soon after, she gave birth to her first child, Joel. Viola then enrolled at Texas Tech, but with her child to care for, she decided to wait. Instead she enrolled in nursing school and became a nurse. She loved her work and enjoyed the job of taking care of others. In 1968, her husband received a Ford Foundation Fellowship that involved the family traveling throughout the country. This was a big opportunity to live in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Mexico D.F., Miami, Puerto Rico. This indeed was an experience of a life time for all of the family. After a year, away from Lubbock, the family returned home. In 1975, they moved to Alpine, Texas, where Abel accepted a job as Director of Admissions at Sul Ross State University. There Viola could enroll at Sul Ross State University. There she earned a Bachelor Degree in Education. In 1980, the family returned to Fort Stockton, where she worked as a nurse in the local nursing home. In 1982, they moved to Dallas, Texas. Viola was hired as a bilingual teacher. There she decided to further her education and enrolled at SMU and completed a Master's Degree in bilingual education. Viola taught in Dallas until she decided to retired with her husband. After Viola, having spent thirty years nursing, and fifteen years in the classroom, she decided to retire. Although she retired, she kept active in the school districts by subbing. One of her dreams was to build her own house in the country. So, they found land in Waxahachie and built her home in 2006. There she was close to her five sons. This also gave her the opportunity to be more active in what she loved to do, as in gardening and church. She was a loving and caring mother, and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Brothers: Gerardo Velasquez, Odessa, Jodell Velasquez, Lubbock.
Visitation is on Friday, March 17th, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm at Heritage Funeral Home, Fort Stockton, Texas. Rosary will begin at 7pm. The funeral service is on Saturday, March 18th, 2017 at 10:30am at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Stockton, Texas.
