John David Borden passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014 at the age of 87. John was born on March 20, 1927 in Rosebud, Texas, to John David and Bettie Borden. He married his sweetheart, Mary Emily Slaughter Borden on August 27, 1955, a union which has endured for 59 years. They were blessed with 3 children, 2 daughters and 1 son.
Mr. Borden served his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years during World War II and 1 year during the Korean Conflict. Following military service, he began a long and distinguished career in Education. He received both a B.S. in 1951 and M. Ed. degree in 1953 from North Texas State College. He began his career in the Copperas Cove ISD, then came to Fort Stockton for 36 more years serving students here. He was a teacher for 4 years, Principal for 16 years and Assistant Superintendent for 16 years. He then served for 8 more years as a teacher of extension classes in Business Administration at Midland College. John held membership in several professional organizations. These included Phi Delta Kappa National Education, Gamma Theta Upsilon National Geographic, and Pi Omega Pi National Business Texas State Teachers Assoc., Texas School Administrators, National School Administrators and National School Business Officials. He is Past President of District VI TSTA Past Deputy District Governor, Region IV Past President, Fort Stockton Noon Lions Club Past Cub MasterPack 154 and Past District Chairman, Permian Basin Boy Scouts. He also actively served the First United Methodist Church in Fort Stockton for many years, as Past Chairman of the Administrative Board, the Finance Committee, the Education Committee and as Financial Secretary. He was selected as Outstanding School Administrator in Texas by the TSTA, Outstanding Regional Volunteer by the American Heart Assoc., Outstanding Lion Member by Fort Stockton Noon Lions Club and Veteran of the Month by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
John is survived by his daughters, Jan Renee and her husband James Mulligan of Alexandria, VA, Sara Elizabeth Borden of Austin, TX, his son, David Osborne Borden of Pecos, TX, and his grandson John Michael Borden. All of John and Emilys children hold Bachelors and Masters degrees. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bettie Borden 3 sisters, Alice Walden, Emma Pavelka, Lena Schmiedekamp and 2 brothers, Willie Franks and Otto Franks.
There will be a visitation at Heritage Funeral Home in Fort Stockton on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 46:00 p.m. A Graveside service will take place at East Hill Cemetery on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m..
