John Walter Roberts, 74 of Marathon and Fort Stockton, Texas passed away July 25, 2017 in Odessa, Texas.
John was born October 20, 1942 in Alpine, Texas to James Travis Roberts and Annie Pauline Roberts. John graduated High School in Marathon, Texas and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. John worked on ranches all his life including The Roberts Ranch, Paisano Cattle Company/Catto Gage Ranch, H.L. Kokernot/06 Ranches in Alpine and Fort Davis, Gage Holland Ranches, Randolph Cattle Co, and Elsinore Cattle Co. and continued his ranching interests on the Roberts home ranch in Brewster Co.
John was a member of the American Legion, Marathon Post and Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He served on the Farm Service Agency Board of Directors as well as the Marathon ISD School Board.
John served in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX and Fort Sill, Oklahoma before deploying to Vietnam as a Sergeant where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal during his service in heavy artillery.
John was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Grandparents and his brother in law, William Hargus. He is survived by his siblings, James Travis Roberts, Jr., Betty Roberts Hargus, and Billy Gene (Ike) Roberts and wife Susan, nieces and nephews, Charles Lorenz and wife Debbie, Peggy Elliott and husband Rob, Joe Roberts and wife Zaira, Sally Roberts, Tim Roberts and wife Amy, James Travis Roberts, III and wife Katie, Terrie Harkey and husband Allen along with several great nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
John loved his family and friends and he loved his cattle, his dogs and the land.
Pallbearers will be Charles Lorenz, Rob Elliott, Joe Roberts, Tim Roberts, Clay Williams and Justin Martin.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Bimbo Babb, Jimmy Coslett, Jimmy Dominquez, Billito Donnell, Paul Golliher, Hank Elliott, Juan Hernandez, George Johnson, Mike Johnson, Gary Lamar, Steve Lawler, Tim Leary, Brent McGuire, Billy Roberts, Jim Roberts, Lee Roberts, Pete Salas, Bill Shackelford, Walter Skinner, Rick Tate and Ted Yaden.
Arrangements are under the care of Heritage Funeral Home of the Big Bend. Family visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on August 4, 2017 at Heritage Funeral Home of the Big Bend in Fort Stockton. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on August 5, 2017 at the Marathon Post Park with Reverend Jim Miles officiating. Burial will follow at the Roberts Ranch Cemetery.
